Explore the rich heritage of the Alpe-Adria region through contemporary choral works inspired by traditional melodies. Folk music is not a relic of the past, but a living source of inspiration. Discover how contemporary choral writing can breathe new life into ancient melodies, and explore the dialogue between tradition and innovation.
The repertoire includes beautiful folk tunes from Slovenia, Italy, and Austria in new artistic forms. Rather than simple arrangements, these works are creative reimaginings, transforming traditional material into refined choral music while preserving emotional depth and cultural identity. They offer both musical challenges and genuine artistic value.
Petra Grassi (she/her), born in Trieste and a member of the Slovene minority in Italy, is one of the most accomplished European choral conductors of her generation. After graduating from the Conservatory of Trieste, she earned a second-level academic diploma in choral conducting from the Conservatory of Trento, where she currently teaches choral conducting and composition.
Her conducting work includes serving as founder and conductor of the VIKRA chamber choir; co-conductor of the Italian Youth Choir, including collaboration with the Italian Youth Orchestra; guest conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir, the Andalusian Youth Choir, and DEKOR Chamber Choir; and principal conductor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Youth Choir. She has led these choirs to first prize in multiple national and international competitions, receiving numerous awards as best conductor. Other awards include the Golden Emblem of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, and the Prešeren Prize under the patronage of the Presidents of the Italian and Slovenian Republics.
Grassi is regularly invited to serve on the juries of prestigious international competitions. Since 2023, she has been a member of the FENIARCO artistic commission and of the international artistic committee of Leading Voices – Tallinn 2025.
