27. Circle Songs for Teenagers
Welcome to circle singing! These simple yet powerful songs can be learned quickly by ear, allowing everyone to participate. We will use our voices, movement, body percussion, and improvisation to create exciting, multi-layered soundscapes to tell different stories about the world and ourselves. Combining Baltic folk songs, jazz, contemporary musical ideas, and improvisation, circle singing reveals how simple ideas can grow into rich musical creations, letting you experience the joy of connection through music.
Whether you are an experienced singer or simply curious, this workshop offers a welcoming space to explore, create, connect, and become part of something bigger than ourselves.
Jonė Girdzijauskaitė-Pocienė
Jonė Girdzijauskaitė-Pocienė (she/her) is an experienced music teacher and children’s music composer from Klaipėda, Lithuania. She studied at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, the Kodály Institute in Hungary, and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria. This education has left her with a broad range of musical experience, which she has been able to use to develop her approach to teaching and making music with young people. Her educational philosophy supports using interdisciplinarity, critical thinking, creativity, and social justice to achieve the kind of education that successfully interacts with a complex and demanding reality.
Through her work at the Klaipėda Vydunas Gymnasium, an arts-oriented grammar school in Klaipėda, she has led numerous creative musical projects, and regularly participates in singing festivals and competitions with the school’s choirs and ensembles. She also composes original music for choirs and ensembles. Girdzijauskaitė-Pocienė's workshop and conference experience includes leading open singing workshops at the Lithuanian junior choir camp.
