Discover the world of Vocal Painting: an innovative musical sign language for jazz/pop choral singing. Through hands-on musical interaction, explore how groove, harmony, improvisation, listening, movement, and collective creativity can merge into extended loop songs and vibrant instant compositions.
Rooted in The Intelligent Choir philosophy (TIC), we will use shorter loop songs, grooves, and vocal textures as springboards for creativity, improvisation, and co-creation. Inspired by Bobby McFerrin's playful vocal language and the Nordic sound aesthetic, we will evolve simple musical structures into larger collective forms through Vocal Painting, listening, interaction, and instant composition. No prior experience with improvisation required!
Jim Daus Hjernøe (he/him) is a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark (DJM/RAMA) and founder of RAMA Vocal Center, which is internationally recognized for innovative work in jazz/pop choral directing and improvisational vocal art.
Since 2002, a major focus of his work has been the development of improvisational choir methodologies. As part of this, he created Vocal Painting (VOPA), an innovative sign language for instant vocal composition and co-creation. His artistic philosophy, The Intelligent Choir (TIC), explores how singers and conductors can share initiative, responsibility, creativity, and musical ownership in the rehearsal and performance process.
Daus Hjernøe is regularly invited to lead international workshops and masterclasses, and has collaborated and shared stages with artists such as Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon. As a conductor, he has toured internationally with his vocal ensembles VoxNorth and RAMA Voices. He is also active within artistic research, hybrid learning environments, and digitally-supported practices in choral music.
